It doesn't have to do with the machine and its specifications since Google Docs is a web application... It's like asking me if Facebook will load faster if I upgrade my RAM.

But since you asked, I just tried to open a 120 pages long docx document on google docs and it took 30 seconds just to load, the experience was laggy and I got a disclaimer that said:

"Docs can't display some features of this Word document. If you continue to edit, some features will be removed or replaced in the file. The original file with full Office features is always available from File > Version history".

Now if that is your idea of "future" I give up.

I have written my thesis in google docs, several years back, when I still hadn't heard about Tex, unfortunately. It was 150 pages long and it was a nightmare. Plus, many plug-ins that Word offers, such as bibliography management with endnote, support for equations etc., are not that good in google docs.

Finally, Word is an application that's evolving for decades now. There is no way that Google docs can compare. I am not a Microsoft advocate but this is the truth, like it or not.

So, it's what you use it for. If you want something to take notes in by all means, use google docs, hell, you can also use google keep if you like. But when you enter an organisation that compiles reports that are hundrends of pages long you can use neither office online nor docs.
